The quality of your volume control has a direct impact on the sound. Te most common solution is a carbon pot. A better way is to solder resistors on a 23 steps switch. However. all of the methods above are throwing away signals. To void that, the only lossless solution is using a pair of 23-steps transformers, and connect them to a 23-steps switch. they can be installed in your chassis if it has enough room or else you can get a separate chassis and RCA at $80 to make a preamp.
